MuddyDriver
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
This is an early driving and physics prototype. It's a sandbox for testing how a heavy truck feels on mud, rocks and rough trails, with multiplayer and a first cargo delivery loop. I'm sharing it so friends can drive it, break it and tell me what feels wrong.
What's here
- Deformable tires: each tire is simulated as a flexible shape rather than a rigid ring, so it squashes over rocks, wraps around roots, and leaves tread marks.
- Mud Valley: a 2 km × 2 km map with ground that deforms. Tires dig ruts, push up berms and spin themselves into holes. Clay, loam and grass behave differently wet and dry. Hit deep mud fast and you'll bog down within a few metres.
- Rigid trail courses: Cedar Hollow and Timberline Ridge are rock-and-log crawling courses. Collision Lab is a test area for bumps and obstacles.
- The Veyra Tern 4X: a solid-axle 4×4 with leaf-spring-style suspension, an automatic transmission and low range. Road, all-terrain and mud tires can be swapped at the workshop.
- Driving together: choose Solo, Host or Join from the startup menu. Share mud ruts, bump into each other's trucks, and pull each other out with winches and tie-off chains. Solo lets you play the same haul loop on your own.
- Haul and recover: load ore at the pit, strap it down, and deliver it to the depot for pay. Cargo changes the truck's weight and balance, and can spill if you get careless. Loads, spilled piles and your balance are saved by the server.
Controls
- W / S: drive / reverse
- A / D: steer
- Space: brake
- R: reset the truck
- P: pause
- Tab: open the spawn menu; W / S choose a spawn, Tab accepts, Esc cancels. Choose the session map at startup; joining uses the host's map.
- Mouse: look around (the Tab menu frees the cursor)
- C: chase / free camera
- M: map overview
- F1: performance panel
- G: hook / release the winch; Q / E: reel in / out; F: tie off / release the chain
- K: load cargo while stopped at the pit or beside a spilled pile; T: strap / unstrap; U: deliver at the depot or dump elsewhere
- L: high / low range; V: cycle tires at the workshop; N: switch final-drive options at the workshop
Where it's headed
The long-term plan is a grounded co-op driving sim for 2–4 friends, with room for up to about 10. It mixes SnowRunner-style mud and recovery with an open industrial region: hauling cargo, repairing infrastructure, pulling each other out of ditches, and building a trucking company together. Multiplayer, recovery and a basic haul loop are here; infrastructure repair and company building are still ahead. The truck and terrain physics are experimental and still need tuning.
Feedback wanted
- How does the truck feel on flat turns, on rock and log climbs, and in deep mud, both empty and loaded?
- How do hauling and recovery feel? Are the cargo, workshop and winch controls clear?
- Anything that looks wrong: floating wheels, jitter, the truck launching itself into orbit.
- Your frame rate (F1) and your GPU/CPU, especially in Mud Valley.
Platform notes
- Windows / Linux: unzip and run
four_wheel(four_wheel.exeon Windows). Keep theassetsandconfigfolders anddedicated_serverexecutable next to it. - Getting started: choose Solo and leave Mud Valley selected to try hauling. Choose Host to play with friends, or Join and enter their server address. Joining automatically selects the server's map. Everyone, including the server, needs the same release.
- Hosting: friends connect on UDP port 37777. You may need to allow it through your firewall and forward it on your router for internet play. The Prototype 1 setup guide covers that network setup; the new menu replaces its launch steps.
- Mac: builds aren't signed. After downloading, right-click → Open, or run
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine <folder>in Terminal. Apple Silicon and Intel builds are separate downloads. - Needs a reasonably modern GPU (DirectX 12, Vulkan or Metal).
